Young IT employee Priyanka was forced to look for a rented house near her workplace in Jubilee Hills. The daily commute from Chaitanyapuri to her office was taking a toll on her health and on her work-life balance. The long travel time was hardly leaving her with any quality time to spend with family or friends. She was eagerly waiting for a solution and the inauguration of the Hyderabad Metro Red Line was music to her ears.
Hyderabad Metro has, in fact, benefitted many IT and ITES employees by cutting down their daily travel time almost by half and by providing convenience and cost-effective advantage.
The Metro Routes
The Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR), inaugurated in 2017 is the world’s largest Public-Private Partnership, which spans 72 km across three corridors, and is being developed at a cost of Rs. 18,800 crores.
The Red Line of the Hyderabad Metro is a 29.2-km corridor, running between Miyapur and LB Nagar. It has 27 stations. The Blue Line between Nagole and Raidurg, is a 27-km two-phased corridor, with 23 stations. The Green Line is the 15-km stretch that will run between JBS and Faluknuma with over 14 stations.
On March 20 this year, a 10-km stretch between Ameerpet and Hi-Tec City was inaugurated, covering 56 km out of the 72-km project. The opening of the stretch from Hitec City to Raidurg in November this year would provide a major relief to a large number of employees working in IT/ITES and other establishments.
Nearly four lakh passengers commute by the Metro daily. After completion and stabilisation, Hyderabad Metro Rail is expected to carry 15 lakh passengers per day.
Benefits to Commuters
With several commuter-friendly advantages, Hyderabad Metro, the second largest Metro network in the country, is integrating the city’s transport system by connecting different busy areas and providing time-saving and comfortable commute to the residents. The commuters can now cut down on their travel time. A ride that usually takes 45 minutes by road will now take only 15 minutes in the Metro.
AC coaches, frequent train service, stations at the one-kilometre interval and other facilities like ticket vending machines, toilets, and dedicated parking areas will make commuting convenient, safe and hassle-free. There are plans to create the last mile connectivity through various means such as bicycles, cabs, skywalks, buses, etc.
The Metro rail project helps to integrate multimodal public transportation with urban spaces in the city. It makes Hyderabad a clean, environmentally sustainable and people-friendly city. So far, the project has turned out to be a unique success story.
With the base fare for a distance of up to two km is Rs 10, and the highest Rs 60, the Metro has lessened the traffic woes of the residents in a cost-effective way.
HMR Boosting Real Estate and Infrastructure
Passing through the arterial roads of the city, the Metro connects major offices, retail and residential areas. The extensive connectivity opportunity of the full-scale metro project covering 150 km across 10 busy corridors will mainstream the fringes of Hyderabad, thus expanding the city limits.
The Metro project has provided the much-needed impetus to the slumping real estate sector in the city. Since 2017, the real estate market sentiments have revived on the areas abutting the routes of the Metro. This is evident in the rising capital values of real estate properties along the Metro corridor. The rental values also went up by about 6-8% in Kondapur and Hitec City areas.
A hike in the land values of adjoining areas of the Metro project has been witnessed with an increase in the land capital prices in areas such as Nagole, Annaram, Bandlaguda, L B Nagar, Thatti and Boddupal. One of the busiest commercial hubs of the city, Miyapur, is likely to witness growth too. While new launches with lucrative discounts and offers are certainly growing in number, the frequency will entirely depend on the pace of absorption.
With a reasonable cost of living, developing urban infrastructure, and less saturation than other metros, the strategic connectivity provided by Hyderabad Metro Rail boosts the image and liveability of the city.
